Studio Alaya promotes use of sustainable natural resources such as Bamboo and Natural Fibers.

Bamboo is one of the most ecologically sustainable natural resource that has been put to diverse uses by generations of traditional communities. Whether used for Architectural construction or for making simple fish traps, bamboo is a wonderfully versatile material.

Studio Alaya specializes in producing Handcrafted Bamboo Furniture, Products and Accessories combining traditional techniques with innovative contemporary design interpretations.  

Natural Fibers such as locally available seasonal grasses from species such as E.Binata, G, optifolia, Jute and Kansi, Seenk, Munj (vernacular names) are available across Uttarakhand and are used by traditional communities in the form of cordage, ropes or basketry. Studio Alaya incorporates many of these fibers in its products.

For centuries, various communities residing in the region have evolved products using locally available materials and skills. These practices include making of copper utensils, wool weaving, basketry in bamboo and natural grass, wall painting etc. Products such as copperware were used in religious ceremonies, such as those made by the Tamtas in Kumaon. Other communities such as the Rana Tharus of Terai made colorful baskets from seasonal grasses that were used to store grains as well as to gift to newly married daughters.

Studio Alaya works with some of these traditional producers to help interpret their craft traditions for contemporary use in order to improve their access to new markets and sustain the craft enterprise. It also works with skill-based producers such as homebased women tailors and young start-up carpenters to develop their income generation capacities and facilitate their transformation into entrepreneurs.
